Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Graduate Engineer to join our growing Engineering team. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate looking to develop a successful career within the structural steel industry, working on a diverse range of structural and civil engineering projects.
Reporting directly to our Senior Design Engineers, you will support the development of structural and civil design packages, ensuring they meet client requirements, industry standards, and Had-Fab’s high expectations for technical quality, commercial viability, and programme delivery.
Working closely with our Design, Detailing, Production, and Fabrication teams, you will gain hands-on experience across the full project lifecycle while receiving support towards professional development and chartership.
This role is ideal for an ambitious graduate with a passion for engineering, problem-solving, and continuous improvement who is looking to build their technical knowledge within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesDesign & Engineering
- Produce structural and civil engineering designs in accordance with current standards, client specifications, and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in developing safe, practical, and cost-effective designs suitable for manufacture, transportation, and installation.
- Produce technical calculations, structural analysis models, and engineering reports using software such as SCIA Engineer, IDEA StatiCa, or equivalent.
- Prepare design mark-ups to support the development of production drawings and 3D models.
- Ensure designs comply with Eurocodes and relevant engineering standards.
Project Coordination
- Manage your own portfolio of design tasks, ensuring work is delivered to agreed programmes and deadlines.
- Work closely with Senior Design Engineers to prioritise workloads and meet project requirements.
- Liaise with the Detailing Team to ensure engineering designs are accurately translated into production models.
- Support project delivery by providing technical assistance throughout the design process.
Site Support
- Attend site visits and engineering surveys across the UK as required.
- Assist with inspections, surveys, and the collection of technical information.
- Provide engineering support during installation activities where required.
Technical Support & Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate with Design, Detailing, Production, and Fabrication teams to resolve technical queries.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at improving engineering processes and project delivery.
- Share knowledge and contribute to the development of engineering best practice across the department.
- Assist in maintaining and improving design procedures and documentation.
Health, Safety, Quality & Compliance
- Ensure health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements are fully considered throughout the design process.
- Comply with all company HSEQ policies, procedures, and relevant legislation.
- Support compliance with CDM Regulations and company management systems.
- Report hazards, near misses, incidents, and quality concerns promptly.
- Ensure engineering documentation is accurate, controlled, and maintained in accordance with company procedures.
- Participate in risk assessments and follow all identified control measures.
The Successful Candidate Essential
- MEng Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (BEng applicants will also be considered).
- Good understanding of structural engineering principles.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines.
- High attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
Desirable
- Knowledge of structural steelwork design.
- Experience using SCIA Engineer, IDEA StatiCa, or other structural analysis software.
- Familiarity with Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, or other 3D CAD software.
- Understanding of Eurocodes and current structural design standards.
- Experience producing technical calculations and engineering reports.
- A willingness to work towards professional chartership with ICE or IStructE.
- Previous placement or internship experience within structural engineering, manufacturing, or construction.
