Case Study – Career Insight Day & Skills First Event
The Challenge
CareerGuard wanted to support the opening of doors for students in our database who might not typically have access to internships in competitive industries. Many students, particularly those from low socio-economic backgrounds, faced barriers such as limited professional networks and a lack of opportunities to demonstrate their skills beyond academic results. We decided to invite students from various colleges and universities in our network to make this possible.
The Solution
CareerGuard worked with the FT to deliver a Career Insight Day alongside a Skills First Event. Students took part in practical exercises in communication, teamwork, and project problem-solving, supported by CareerGuard’s SkillScreening test library to showcase both technical and soft skills.
By focusing on capability rather than background, the process helped level the playing field and gave data-driven insights into student potential.
Results
80+ students participated in the Career Insight Day and Skills Workshop.
Many attendees were from low socio-economic backgrounds, gaining access to opportunities they might not otherwise have reached.
25% of students were shortlisted for internships through SkillScreening results.
Several students secured internship invitations in journalism and project management.
Successful hires were made, including placements, where students entered journalism and project support roles.
Maximize Your Online Impact
For students, the program provided confidence, employability skills, and real opportunities to break into industries often seen as inaccessible. For employers, it enabled a more inclusive recruitment pipeline while identifying motivated, capable candidates ready to add value. By combining live workshops with SkillScreening, CareerGuard created a scalable model for inclusive recruitment, ensuring that talent from diverse socio-economic backgrounds is given the same chance to thrive. The initiative not only led to hires at the Financial Times but also generated internship invitations across journalism and project management, building a stronger future talent pipeline.
